Cross-sector actions focus on opportunities and diversity in science and technology fields.
White House officials announced initiatives at the summit on STEMM equality and excellence that are intended to reinforce competitiveness and accessibility in the science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) fields. Headed by the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), the series of cross-sector efforts include securing commitments from non-federal entities to address needs within STEMM to enhance representation in media, promote inclusive workplaces, and increase accessibility to related programs.
The White House stated the planned goal is “to add 20 million new diverse STEMM professionals to the U.S. workforce across all jobs and sectors by 2050.”
The STEMM Opportunity Alliance (SOA) made commitments to these initiatives to advance STEMM Equity and Excellence 2050, a national strategy to cultivate a diverse workforce with expanded opportunities. The SOA coalition, representing over 200 organizations, has raised support totaling $2 billion towards STEMM equity efforts.
